What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a medical modality based on the concept that the body functions as a whole unit with one systemic circulation. This circulation involves blood, body fluids, nerve conduction and energy that move through a network of meridians. When circulation is impaired by anything such as physical trauma, poor diet, tight muscles, intense emotions, lack of exercise, overwork or stress, the body manifests symptoms. In the allopathic medical model symptoms are treated individually and are usually medicated. In the acupuncture medical model symptoms are seen as part of an underlying imbalance. Once the root cause is identified, the body’s natural internal flow is corrected and the symptoms go away. The body heals itself.
How does it work?
Very small needles which are as thin as an eyelash, solid, stainless steel, sterile and disposable are placed in carefully selected acupuncture points on your body based on your symptoms and root causes. The needles are left in while you rest and they give your body the instructions it needs to correct the imbalance. Most people fall into a deep state of relaxation and many fall asleep during the treatments.
What is it good for?
The World Health Organization recommends acupuncture for almost anything that doesn't require surgery. Although I treat people for a variety of reasons, I specialize in symptoms and diseases caused by stress. That includes headaches, migraines, insomnia, neck and shoulder pain due to tension, digestive disorders, hormonal imbalances, moodiness, irritability, poor immune function, low back and joint pain. Other important applications are the symptomatic relief of pain due to injury (sprains, strains and trauma) and treatment of colds and flu. Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine coupled with acupuncture does wonders to reduce the severity and duration of colds and flu. Studies have also show acupuncture to reduce the healing time and pain due to injury significantly.
Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine are organized systems of medicine that have been practiced in the East for over 3,000 years. Only since 1974 have these practices been used in the United States and are currently the treatment choice of millions of people per year. Clinical studies are regularly proving its effectiveness in treating many conditions. So much so, that increasing numbers of insurance providers are now covering acupuncture as an option for your health care.
